Calabash, Brunswick County NC, known as the “Seafood Capital of the World”, is the southernmost city in NC bordering SC. Its history stretches back to the early 1700’s but it did not get its name until 1883. Originally farm land and a logging operation, today Calabash has a thriving shrimping industry and is known for its restaurants serving the original “Calabash style” seafood. The Calabash River is host to many ocean going vessels offering charter fishing to scenic cruises and of course the many shrimp boats that supply nearly 30 restaurants in Calabash. Today Calabash is a tourist destination and the town has many unique gifts shops and retail businesses to keep the vacationers busy. One can enjoy homemade ice-cream and stroll through the Christmas Shop and find unique ornaments and gifts. Calabash NC should be on your “things to do list” and definitely plan on staying for dinner.
