The center of Monkey Junction NC is the intersection of College Rd (NC 132) and Carolina Beach Rd (US 421). This intersection is a hub of commerce. One can find many restaurants from fast food to fine dining and shopping options from Wal-Mart to major home improvements stores. Residents do not have to leave this area often to find what they need. Monkey Junction is outside the city limits of Wilmington, NC in New Hanover County. It encompasses several square miles of residential properties as well as the commerce areas. Virtually every person travelling to Carolina Beach NC will pass through this intersection. This area got its name nearly 70 years ago when a gas station at the intersection, owned by Dina and Jack Spindle, set out to drum up more business. They wanted to attract the people going to Carolina Beach. To do this they had live monkeys on display in their store. People would come in to see the monkeys and inevitably buy some things as well. There was a bus stop at the gas station and the bus driver would call out, “Monkey Junction” upon reaching the destination. Neighborhoods in this area are primarily made up of homes in the $150,000.00 to $300,000.00 range. Homes are still being built today but most construction took place between the 1980’s and 90’s.
